Environmental and Energy Management program faculty, students and alumni celebrated the achievements of this year’s graduates during the SEAS 2017 Celebration of Student Achievement ceremony that was conducted in the Smith Center on Friday evening, May 19, 2017. The ceremony marked the 135th year of the existence of the School of Engineering and Applied Science.

EEM graduate Indrajeet Viswanathan was one of the featured speakers, providing remarks prior to the award of the GW Alumni Association prize. Jeet is a former Chair of the GW Alumni Association.

As in years past, EEM Lead Professor Jonathan Deason served as the School Marshall and EEM Assistant Professor Ekundayo Shittu served as the Chief Faculty Marshall.

SEAS Dean David Dolling congratulated the graduates with achieving some of the most challenging majors in the University, acknowledging the diversity of the SEAS graduating class, which had about double the national average of universities around the nation.

This year’s student speaker was Kassidy Schmitz, who graduated with a B.S. in mechanical and aerospace engineering, said the graduates should ask themselves what it means to be engineers and computer scientists.

This years’ keynote speaker was graduate Swati Vauthrin, Director of Engineering at BuzzFeed. She added considerable humor by stating “I failed two classes here at SEAS in the same semester. I’m guessing Dean Dolling forgot about that when he asked me to stand here in front of you today.”
