Professor Joe Cascio, co-Director of the Environmental and Energy Management Institute, was awarded the top honor available from The American Society for Quality. The honor, which is the 2016 Freund-Marquardt Medal, was awarded “For leadership and dedication in the development of international standards in environmental management and sustainability; for his application of environmental quality management principles in both public and private sectors; and for guidance provided through his numerous publications on the subject.”

The award will be presented to Prof. Cascio at the World Conference on Quality and Improvement to be held at the Wisconsin Center in, Milwaukee, Wisconsin during the period May 16–18, 2016. Prof. Cascio will be present for the ceremony to be conducted in his honor.

The award is in recognition of Prof. Cascio’s lifetime of contributions to the use of environmental management standards to improve the quality of life and the environment throughout the world. Prof. Cascio served as Chairman of the U.S. Technical Advisory Group on the ISO-14000 (Environmental Management) series of standards from 1991 to 2003. In that role, he served as the lead U.S. negotiator on the International Technical Committee of the International Standards Organization (headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland) that developed those standards.

Prof. Cascio also co-authored The ISO 14000 Guide, published by McGraw-Hill, and edited the “ISO 14000 Handbook," now published by the American Society for Quality. He is recognized in the U.S. and throughout the world as an expert on environmental management and as the key architect and strategist in formulating the U.S. posture on the ISO-14000 series of standards. He has authored over three-dozen articles and papers, delivered hundreds of speeches and presentations, and testified before Congressional sub-committees on environmental management.
