EEMI Board Member Inducted into the National Academy of Engineering

Dr. Lilia Abron, a long-time member of the Board of Advisors of the SEAS Environmental and Energy Management Institute, was inducted into the National Academy of Engineering on October 4, 2020. Election to the NAE is among the highest professional honors that can be bestowed on engineers.  According to the press release announcing Dr. Abron's election, “Academy membership honors those who have made outstanding contributions to "engineering research, practice, or education, including, where appropriate, significant contributions to the engineering literature."


Founded in 1964, the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) is a private, independent, nonprofit institution that provides engineering leadership in service to the nation. The mission of the National Academy of Engineering is to advance the well-being of the nation by promoting a vibrant engineering profession and by marshalling the expertise and insights of eminent engineers to provide independent advice to the federal government on matters involving engineering and technology.


AwardThe NAE is part of The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. The NAE operates under the same congressional act of incorporation that established the National Academy of Sciences, signed in 1863 by President Lincoln. Under this charter the NAE is directed "whenever called upon by any department or agency of the government, to investigate, examine, experiment, and report upon any subject of science or art."


Dr. Abron also received an EEMI Distinguished Service Award to from Dean John Lach at the January 17, 2020 EEMI Board meeting. In presenting the award, Dean Lach said “Dr. Abron has been and a pioneer and visionary in the environmental engineering consulting industry here in Washington, D.C. Her experience spans more than 45 years in planning, managing and directing environmental engineering programs for the improvement, maintenance and enhancement of the natural and built environments. Perhaps even closer to our hearts here in SEAS - Dr. Abron has hired more than a half-dozen of our graduates over the past few years, all of whom, according to what I hear, are doing great jobs and are extremely satisfied with their first professional experiences.”
