EEMI’s international environmental and energy leadership series continued to attract widespread attention throughout the Fall 2021 semester.

On September 2, EEMI hosted a webinar on Denmark's pioneering actions towards energy sustainability. The event, entitled “From Vikings to Wind Turbines, Denmark’s Journey Toward Sustainability” featured Dan Jørgensen, the Danish Minister of Climate, Energy, and Utilities. Minister Jørgensen was interviewed by EEMI Visiting Scholar Ambassador András Simonyi on Denmark’s journey toward sustainability. Topics included the European Commission’s 2021 "Fit for 55" legal framework to achieve climate goals, Denmark's pioneering role in energy transition, transatlantic climate and energy cooperation, and preparation for COP26.

Fiona HillOn October 19, EEMI Visiting Scholar András Simonyi interviewed Fiona Hill, Senior Fellow at Brookings and former National Security Council official, including a discussion of her new book, "There Is Nothing for You Here: Finding Opportunity in the Twenty-First Century."

Our October 26th event featured Gaya Herrington, Director, Advisory, Sustainability Services, KPMG about SDG Goal 12 and COP26 imperatives. Gaya's widely acclaimed publication "Update to Limits to Growth" is a 2021 check on the 1972 best-selling book (Limits to Growth). Using updated scenarios, she applied current models that show either we end up with an unmanaged social and environmental decline, which would be catastrophic, or a managed leveling out of our economies, shaped by a shift in social values and expectations. Gaya was joined on the webinar by Nancy Gillis, Chief Executive Officer, Global Electronics Council, and Karim Ahmed, Secretary-Treasurer, Global Council for Science and the Environment Board of Directors.
